Most employers occasionally bring in temporary workers. You might need to hit a deadline, or work in a seasonal industry, or need to cover a regular employee’s extended leave. No matter why you’re using temps, be sure not to overlook them when you have a full-time opening. Here are a few reasons to always look more closely at your current and past temp workers.
You Know What to Expect
Hiring the right candidate is tough. You have to write a job description that accurately covers the many daily duties. You have to figure out which skills a strong candidate will bring to the table. You’ll need to determine whether a potential new hire has the work ethic you’re looking for, and you might even end up flipping a coin to decide between two very similar job seekers.
By contrast, you already know what to expect from those who have worked for you temporarily. You know how they perform on a day-to-day basis. You’re family with their work product, their skills, and their dedication. If you’re already satisfied with what they do, why take a risk on someone new?
They Know Your Company
No two workplaces are exactly alike. You have your own way of doing things, from scheduling to organizational structure, not to mention company culture. It can take a while for new employees to learn where the bathroom is, never mind to fully adapt to the rhythms of the worksite. But your temp workers have already moved past that point. They know your expectations and day to day structure, and they have learned the on-the-job skills needed for success. Why look elsewhere when you have an existing workforce that already knows the ropes?
They Know Your Staff
New employee can be disruptive, even if they’re highly skilled and quite personable. It takes time for new relationships to form and for teams to build cohesion. Your temp staff has already created those bonds. They’re comfortable with your team members and leaders, and vice versa. Bringing them on full-time lets you strengthen working relationships rather than risk new disruptions.
