How to Make Working on a Holiday More Enjoyable

Many employees dread working on a holiday, but it happens to almost everyone sooner or later. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make it more enjoyable. If you’re scheduled for holiday work, here a few tips to keep you in the holiday spirit.

Negotiate

Maybe you don’t really need to be there all day. Perhaps you can get an extra day off the following week. Talk to your boss about various possibilities to make up for working on the holiday. Also find out if you qualify for holiday pay, which can be significantly more than your regular hourly rate.

Celebrate Another Day

Just because the calendar says it’s a holiday, no one is forced to celebrate on that day. Talk to your friends and family about moving the festivities to your next day off. Even if they still get together on the holiday, many of them will likely be happy to attend your post-holiday shindig as well.

Stay Off Your Phone

If you’re stuck at work, you’ll likely be tempted to scroll through social media or text everyone you know. Resist the urge, as everyone will be posting photos of themselves having fun. The exception is if you know someone else is also at work. Then you may be able to cheer each other up. Otherwise, put your phone away and take a walk to boost your mood.

Focus on Your Work Goals

Distraction is the key to getting through a situation you don’t really want to be in. Write a list of tasks to accomplish at work, and challenge yourself to get through them quickly but accurately. The time will pass much faster when you’re engaged with your work, and you will end the day with a sense of accomplishment that can boost your mood.

Reward Yourself

When you finally make it through the workday, don’t go home to mope. Meet up with a friend, go look at holiday decorations downtown, or just get in a good workout. Whatever you choose should be something you enjoy but don’t always make time for. It will help you feel a bit festive and chase away the holiday blues.

Working on a holiday is not much fun for anyone. Rather than feeling sorry for yourself, though, focus on the tips above to make the day as enjoyable as possible.
