How to Improve Your Work-Life Balance As a Full-Time Employee

Find the right work-life balance is vital for both your physical and mental health. But what does that mean day to day, especially if you work full time? Here are a few tips.

Accept Imperfection

There is no such thing as perfect balance, especially since needs change from day to day. Your personal responsibilities are not static, your workload will vary, and your personal energy levels will rise and fall. Seek a better balance over time, while accepting that any single day could be wildly out of balance.

Choose Work You Love

You might have heard the old saying, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” That’s not entirely true. All jobs have their downside. But you’ll feel more balanced if your work feeds your passion. Work culture also matters. Make sure you’re in a positive environment that makes you feel valued and supported.

Put Your Health First

You can’t give your best to anyone if you aren’t at your best. Physical, mental, and emotional health all play a vital role. Call in sick when you need to, implement an exercise routine that you enjoy, and make time for friends and family. You are not a machine, and you need to take care of yourself first. Otherwise, you’re risking burnout and chronic health issues.

Disconnect Completely

Your off hours should be just that. Don’t take work home, and don’t take it on vacation with you. Disconnect from the office whenever you’re not there, and unplug completely now and then. Let your boss and coworkers know exactly when you’ll be back, and then resist the urge to check in.

Prioritize

There will always be something else to do, but that doesn’t mean it has to be done right now. Keep a running to-do list. Every morning, take a few minutes to note your top priorities. Block off time for key projects during the hours that you are most productive, and stop checking your email when you’re working on something important.

Go Remote

If you’re in the type of role that can be done remotely, consider signing up. Even working from home one or two days per week can help improve your work-life balance. If your job requires in-person attendance, find out if there is any flexibility. Could you work a compressed schedule, or maybe come in late and stay late once a week? More flexibility gives you more control over your work-life balance.
