Holidays can be incredibly hectic, as you attempt to add cooking, cleaning, shopping, decorating, and special events to your calendar. If this also happens to be your busy season at work, it can be easy to start feeling overwhelmed. The best solution is to take a proactive approach to maintain your work-life balance.
1. Take a Vacation
Unless your company is “all hands on deck” over the holidays, try to take a few days off. Even a staycation can help you clear your head and regain your balance. Just be careful not to overload on holiday prep. Take at least part of the time to relax alone or with close friends or family simply.
2. Get Organized
Pull out your day planner or open your favorite calendar app and start scheduling. Figure out how long each event (work or personal) will actually take, and block out that time. Don’t overcommit, and resist the urge to multitask. You might think you’re saving time by shopping online during a meeting, but you’ll end up missing important information while simultaneously overspending.
3. Focus on Self Care
The busier you are, the more you really need to carve out time for yourself. From a hike in the woods to a favorite video game, schedule time for the things that truly energize you. You’ll feel healthier and more balanced, even during a super busy week, if you’re taking care of yourself. And stay home if you’re sick. It’s always essential, but as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s the best gift you can give both to yourself and others.
4. Embrace the Holiday Spirit
Even if you’re pulling long days at work, there’s no reason to leave the holiday spirit behind. Play holiday music. Ask for permission to decorate your workspace. Join coworkers for festive drinks after work. Suggest a Secret Santa gift exchange. Maintaining the holiday spirit throughout your workday will help you stay balanced and remind you of why you’re working so hard in the first place.
