More employers are bringing voluntary employee wellness programs into the workforce than ever before. As these programs become more prominent in the workplace we are seeing a drop in the employee turnover rate at these companies. After all employee health should matter, because the healthier employees are the less likely employees are to miss work because of an illness.
By implementing an employee wellness program employers are creating an added value for their employees. They are not just giving them a paycheck in return for their time spent anymore, but investing in their health which is investing in their overall future in and outside of the workplace. These wellness programs help boost employee morale, worth, and overall positivity in the company so why not get involved?
Wellness programs include information on, but are not limited to:
- Nutrition
- Exercise
- Becoming Tobacco Free
Wellness programs are again voluntary, but they offer a support system while at work in order for employees to maintain healthy habits. When focusing on nutrition, companies involved in a wellness program will often bring in a guest speaker to talk with their employees about what is involved in a well balanced diet. Also, the wellness group will schedule a lunch carry-in once a month in order for employees to share their healthy snacks with the team.
Not too many people have the time to exercise or they flat out just don’t want to go to the gym. With wellness programs some companies are paying for their employees gym membership and giving them time to go. Exercise can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure, allowing employees to feel more refreshed when going back to work. Offering incentives to employees participating in the wellness programs is also beneficial in boosting morale, and overall support. Overall, exercise has many benefits for the body and the wellness program gives many employees a reason to live a healthier life.
Forcing or policing individuals to quit their tobacco use at work will never work or boost morale. That is why companies are giving individuals help with kicking their habit by offering a support group or incentives in the form of healthcare reduction if they quit using tobacco. Offering voluntary support in the workplace is the best way in helping employees become tobacco free.
