A temp-to-hire position is, in many ways, an extended working interview. You and your employer agree to a temporary contract, with the option to turn the position into a full-time job at the end. While you should take advantage of this time to make sure the job is right for you, there are also steps you can take to encourage your boss to extend a full-time offer. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Reliability
Remember, your temp-to-hire position is effectively a working interview. Would you hire someone who didn’t show up regularly or was always late? Prove your reliability during your temporary contract.
2. Positivity
Everyone wants to work with someone who makes them feel good. You don’t need to plaster on a fake smile, but always try to stay friendly. Greet your colleagues when you see them and work on building personal bonds. Steer well clear of office politics or gossip, instead of treating everyone in a fair and friendly way.
3. Team Focus
You might be tempted to try to stand out, but don’t forget that you’re part of a team. Offer to assist your coworkers with projects, show genuine appreciation when they help you, and always share the spotlight in group projects.
4. Speak Up
An old saying states that “an expert is someone from out of town.” You may not be from out of town, but you do bring a fresh perspective. Don’t be afraid to speak up. If you run into an issue, think of some possible solutions and present them to your team or your boss. When meeting with your team, try to think of one or two talking points ahead of time.
Likewise, don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’re new, and you won’t be expected to know everything. Reach out to another team member or to your supervisor with any questions you have, from how to use a particular piece of software to where to find the restroom.
5. Take It Slow
Don’t try to rush into a full-time offer. Take your time and get to know the position, the team, and the company. When you’re sure you want to stay, it’s a good idea to express your interest. But realize that it may take some time for the company to become ready to make an offer.
