Not every temp job is a possible full-time opportunity. Still, the majority of companies are always looking for top talent. Getting your foot in the door as a temp gives you the opportunity to shine, potentially opening a pathway to the full-time position of your dreams. Here are a few things you can do to try to leverage your temporary position.
1. Play Detective
It’s a lot easier to research a company more deeply from the inside. Check out the company’s values and organizational structure. Identify gaps in their full-time workforce. Determine whether a new skill or a particular certification might make you a better fit. Learn what you can, and then take proactive steps to meet an identified need.
2. Roll with It
Uncertainty is the new norm in today’s work world. Demonstrate that you know how to be agile, solve problems on the fly, and incorporate conflicting and rapidly changing data. Don’t dig in your heels on anything unless you have a solid reason for doing so.
3. Be a Team Player
Avoid office politics, but get to know everyone you can within your department and across the company. Volunteer for new projects. Offer to help others with things they are working on, and ask for their help. Be friendly, be loyal, and show your value to the team. Network within the company, but be mindful not to ask for favors without offering anything in return simply.
4. Talk to Your Recruiter
Your recruiter is in your corner. When you succeed, she succeeds. So don’t be afraid to leverage her existing relationship with the company. Tell your recruiter that you want to move into a full-time role, and listen carefully to any offered advice.
Not every company is open to taking on temp workers on a full-time basis. But you never know unless you ask. Do your homework, show your flexibility and loyalty, and demonstrate your value to the organization. With a bit of luck, and an assist from your recruiter, you might just be able to transition from your temp job into the full-time position of your dreams.
