Supporting Your Team While Suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a sometimes-debilitating form of depression that hits during the long winter months. There is also a summer version, but it isn’t nearly as common. As a manager, you need to radiate positivity in the workplace. But how can you do that while coping with SAD yourself? Here are some tips.

Recognize the Symptoms

SAD is more than simply feeling blue. Common symptoms include:

  • Feeling depressed or hopeless
  • Low energy
  • Sleeping too much
  • Overeating
  • Social withdrawal

If you start to recognize these symptoms in yourself, it’s time for a reality check. Seasonal affective disorder can dramatically impact your work, including your relationships with your employees. Consider seeing your doctor or a mental health professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Manage Your Condition

Although professional help is important, there are things you can do at home and at work to help keep your symptoms at bay. One of the most important is light exposure therapy. You can purchase a light therapy box online (look for one with a brightness of at least 2,500 lux). Sit with it for 30 minutes each morning before heading to work. Never look directly into the light. Check with your doctor first if you are sensitive to light, are on antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications, have any visual issues, or have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

It’s also very important to practice self-care. At work, delegate as many tasks as possible to trusted employees and resist the urge to micromanage. Consider disclosing your condition to your team members and let them know how they can help.

At home, be kind to yourself. Take plenty of time out to simply curl up with a cup of tea and a good book or favorite movie. Keep your home warm and comfortable. Open curtains to allow natural light to flood in.

Stick to the Basics

If you’re coping with seasonal affective disorder, this is not the right time to spearhead new initiatives at work. Keep things flowing and stay the course. When spring rolls around and your symptoms lift, you will be in a much better position to take on new clients and projects.
