U.S. manufacturing workers are sending a clear message in 2026, life outside of work matters most. A new survey from MAU Workforce Solutions finds that 43% of workers rank work-life balance as their top job benefit, pushing pay into second place.
Balance > Pay (For Now)
This marks a shift from 2025, when compensation led employee priorities. Today, workers are looking for roles that fit their lives—not the other way around. Health and wellness benefits lag far behind, cited by just 8%.
What Workers Really Want
When it comes to schedules, priorities mirror the bigger trend:
- Work-life balance: 43%
- Pay: 23%
- Shift flexibility: 16%
- Childcare: 10%
- PTO: 7%
Flexibility isn’t a perk anymore—it’s expected.
Tech Curiosity Is Growing
Nearly half of workers (47%) say they’re open to AI and digital tools. Still, adoption is uneven:
- 31% have used AI at work
- 57% haven’t yet
- 12% engage a few times per week
There’s interest—but also a clear upskilling gap.
Money Still Talks
Even with balance taking the top spot, pay remains a dealbreaker:
- 52% would leave for a higher salary
- Most earn $16–$25/hour
- 81% say inflation is hitting their finances
Bottom Line
Work-life balance may be the headline, but compensation is still the final decider. Employers who want to stay competitive will need to deliver both—flexibility and fair pay.
