Preparing for Success as a Maintenance Technician

Maintenance technicians wear many hats. Depending on where you work, you might be called upon to perform basic carpentry and painting, to repair HVAC equipment, or even to do some plumbing work. It’s a hard job, but it can be quite rewarding both financially and personally. Lots of people want the job, though, so to be successful, you need to stand out from the pack. Here are some tips.

Look Respectable

No one expects you to show up in a three-piece suit to fix their air conditioner, but you shouldn’t look like you just rolled out of bed. Tuck in your shirt, comb your hair and make sure your clothes are clean at the beginning of the day. If you have facial hair, keep it well-groomed. Just paying a little bit of attention to your appearance can help you rise to the top.

Study Hard

Because maintenance technicians perform so many different jobs, those who can do them well will find success. Learn everything you can about the systems for which you are responsible. Take every opportunity to shadow those who have skills you don’t yet have. Consider getting certified in one or more areas, such as plumbing or electrical work. Keep your employer in the loop as you acquire new skills and knowledge, and be ready to talk about the additional value you now bring to the company.

Be Bold

Everyone makes mistakes, yet the fear of failure can be paralyzing. Trust in your skills and experience, and don’t be afraid to try. Of course, it’s only smart to ask for assistance with things you have never seen before. But even then, make yourself an active helper. Don’t stand back and wait for your coworker to complete the repair alone. Throw yourself into your work and watch your confidence grow.

Stay Positive

Everyone has bad days. But as a maintenance technician, you’re going into people’s homes or offices and interrupting the flow of their day. Spreading a bit of positivity is a great way to put them at ease and make them feel more comfortable as you work. You may even find that people start requesting you by name, which will eventually get back to your boss. When clients are happy, bosses are happy. And that can translate into more and more success for you.
