The Qualifications Needed to Become a Forklift Operator

At first glance, a forklift operator may seem like a fun and easy job. In reality, while it can be enjoyable, it is also a safety-critical position that has specific requirements. Fortunately, qualified forklift operators are always in demand.

Here are the qualifications you need to enter the field:

Minimum Age

Operating a forklift can be hazardous. Therefore, the Fair Labor Standards Act sets a minimum age of 18 for forklift operators in non-agricultural work.

High School Diploma or GED

Although this is not a hard and fast rule, most employers want their forklift operators to have a high school diploma or GED. It’s a technical position that requires basic literacy and math skills. Showing that you’ve completed this level of education assures your employer that you have the necessary knowledge.

OSHA Certification

All forklift operators must complete a certification course that meets standards set by OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration). You may be able to complete your certification through your employer, but some workplaces will not hire forklift operators unless they are already certified. Fortunately, independent forklift certification courses are generally easy to find.

Health Considerations

Although a formal medical assessment is not required, it is important to be in excellent physical health. Being a forklift operator is a physically demanding job. It’s a good idea to have a checkup before you get started.

In addition, you must be free of alcohol or substance abuse. Because a forklift operator is a safety-critical position, employers often require their employees to take a drug test. This may happen both before your job offer and randomly at any time. If you are involved in a forklift accident, alcohol and drug testing may be legally required immediately following the accident. Serious penalties may apply if you were under the influence at the time of the accident.

Becoming a forklift operator can be a rewarding career. But it’s not as simple as just filling out an application. Make sure you meet all the requirements and consider getting your OSHA certification in advance. You will soon land the forklift operator position you always wanted.
