More than half of all workers are considering a job change in 2021. The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic shuttered workplaces and gave employees the opportunity to think about what they really want to do. While you can’t prevent everyone from leaving, there are a few steps you can take to decrease employee turnover this year. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Onboarding
Onboarding is a new employee’s first look at how things run on a day to day basis. So it’s important for employers to make a good first impression. Yet for too many companies, onboarding is a bit of an afterthought. Take some time to revamp your onboarding procedures, making sure you give new hires all the tools and information they need for success.
2. Training
It’s not enough to simply train new employees to do the job you hired them to do. Employees are more likely to stay long-term if they are continually encouraged to learn and grow. Find ways to implement ongoing training programs for all employees, but make sure they are meaningful. No one wants to sit through yet another variation of the same basic class.
3. Safety Plans
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to provide a safe workplace, according to written guidelines that vary by the type of facility. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are also understandably concerned about exposure to the virus. Update your safety plans accordingly.
4. Long-Term Pathways
If you want your employees to stay for more than a year or two, you’ll need to establish long-term pathways for career advancement. While it’s true for all ages, millennials are especially committed to career growth. Look for opportunities to provide mentorships, job shadowing, or even tuition reimbursement.
5. Employee Engagement
From financial incentives to employee of the month programs, employee reward programs are a powerful way to build engagement and decrease employee turnover. You will also want to find ways to personally connect with your team members and to help them bond with each other. Examples include catered luncheons, parties, or even trips to escape rooms or other teambuilding locales. The more engaged your employees feel, the less likely they are to want to leave.
