Company culture can be loosely described as everything that affects an employee’s day to day experience. Increasingly, job hunters are looking for the right fit, not just a paycheck. So to attract and retain top talent, you’ll need to make sure your culture is transparent, welcoming, and inclusive. Here are a few ways you could be scaring away your ideal candidates.
1. Values
Your corporate values are among the biggest factors that shape company culture. Have you defined your values? Are you ensuring that your entire team lives them every day. If you don’t have clear values, now is the time to sit down and decide what they will be. If you do have them, take a critical look at your daily operations to see where you’re falling short of implementing them company wide.
2. Bro Culture
Some male dominated companies look more like frat houses. If team bonding consists mostly of drinking and violent video games, and watercooler humor is mostly sexist and/or racist, you’re not going to attract too many women or minorities. Take a step back, rethink your corporate mission, and make a pledge to do better. Sensitivity training and a zero tolerance bullying policy may be in order.
3. Diversity and Inclusion
Even if you don’t have a bro culture, you may be making some mistakes that are limiting the diversity of your talent pool. Revisit your job postings and training materials to make sure you’re using inclusive language. Start a diversity and inclusion initiative in which women and employees of varying ethnic backgrounds are empowered to share feedback and help you decide on next steps.
4. Leadership
Take a hard look at your organization’s management style. Gone are the days of a mostly unseen leader giving directives from the corner office. Today’s top talent expects leaders to be available, transparent, and open to feedback. If your managers aren’t regularly walking the floor and engaging with employees, you’re missing a valuable opportunity. Commit to giving constructive, solution oriented feedback to your employees, and to keeping the lines of communication open. Model the behaviors you would like to see from your workers.
