What Shift Is Best for You and Your Family? Find Out!

Many companies run 24 hours a day, which means you’ll be working one of three shifts. If you’ve always worked during the day, you might just assume that the first shift is the best. But that’s not true for all families. Before applying for a shift work job, take a bit of time to consider the pros and cons of each shift.

1. First Shift

As the name implies, first shift marks the opening of a new workday. At most 24-hour companies, first shift runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. or from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If your spouse isn’t a shift worker or you have kids in school, this shift will likely give you the most time with your family. It frees you up for traditional social activities, and the hours are easy for many people to adapt to.

But first shift isn’t perfect. Since most people workdays, your commute will likely be tougher. You might have trouble getting up in the mornings. It can also be difficult to take care of errands without taking time off work. In addition, it may be nearly impossible for new hires to get this shift.

2. Second Shift

Also known as swing shift, second shift starts in the afternoon and runs through the evening. Typical hours are 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. or 4 p.m. to midnight.

This can be an ideal shift for those who are at their best in the evening. You can go to bed late and sleep in, squeeze in errands before work, and possibly even pick up your kids from school (depending on schedules). You’ll be traveling at less crowded times, which could mean a shorter and easier commute.

But there are disadvantages. It can be harder to carve out a social life, especially if your friends and family work daytime hours. You’ll miss evening events like football games or theater performances. And some people find it hard to stay awake and alert in the late evening.

3. Third Shift

Third shift is also known as the graveyard shift. It generally runs from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. or midnight to 8 a.m.

Third shift can be a great choice for night owls or those who can easily adjust their sleep cycles. Most workplaces are quieter overnight, which can comfort introverts or those who just want to get things done without interruptions. Many businesses pay a premium for overnight work. You may even be able to reduce childcare costs, especially if your spouse or partner works days.

However, many people struggle to adapt to an overnight schedule. You might experience physical and mental symptoms of exhaustion. It can be tough to get anything done on your days off, and connecting with loved ones can be a constant challenge.

There is no single shift that works best for everyone. Think about your own needs and desires, and talk it over with your family to decide which shift is right for you.
