Don’t Burn Out—How to Get the Time Off You Need at Work

Everyone needs a break—but when you’re working in a warehouse, factory, or shop, getting time off isn’t always easy. Here’s your guide to getting time off the right way.

1. Know the Rules

Every company is different. Before you ask for time off, make sure you know:

  • Does PTO apply to your role?
  • How many PTO hours you have available
  • If unpaid days are allowed once PTO runs out
  • When you’re eligible to use PTO (blackout dates or waiting periods may apply)

Don’t guess—check the handbook, ask HR, or confirm with your supervisor.

2. Pick the Right Time (If You Can)

Avoid peak times like busy seasons, inventory, or when several coworkers are already off. The more notice you give, the better your chances—two to four weeks is a safe bet for longer breaks.

3. Put It in Writing

Even if your boss gives a verbal “yes,” make it official. Follow your company’s normal process. This could include confirming via email, HR portal, or even in written form. This ensures everyone is on the same page.

4. Plan Ahead

Show you’ve thought it through. Be ready to explain how your work will be handled—whether you’ll finish tasks early, hand them off, or set up a backup plan. This builds trust and shows respect for your team and the operation.

5. If They Say No, Stay Cool

Sometimes the timing just doesn’t work. Ask why and suggest other dates. Stay flexible, but if it’s important or personal, don’t be afraid to explain why the time off matters.

6. Use It—Don’t Lose It

Plenty of people skip vacation because they don’t want to seem lazy. Don’t do that. Rest is part of the job. Burnout helps no one. If your company offers time off, use it—you’ve earned it.
