Are you bored at work, but not ready to look for a new job? Do you want to advance in your career, but your employer isn’t currently offering promotions? Here are a few ways you can start working on advancement in your current role.
Ask for New Challenges
Even if you can’t get a promotion yet, you can set the stage for future advancement. When a new project comes up, volunteer for it. Have a meeting with your boss and lay out the skills you want to learn or areas you would like to get involved with. Asking for new challenges can help you feel more engaged while putting you on the radar for a future promotion.
Build Your Network
Do you have your eye on another department in your company? Are you hoping to move into a leadership role? Job shadowing and mentorships can help you develop relationships with people who might be able to help you make a move. Keep building your network outside of the company as well, since you never know where your dream position might come from.
Invest in Yourself
If you’re serious about advancing your career, it might be worth investing some of your own money. Learn as much as you can about the positions that interest you. Are there certifications you could earn to make you more competitive? Would something like a forklift operator license or a commercial driver’s license help you reach your goals? Is it time to go back to school? In many cases, you can keep your current job while pursuing the credentials you need for future career advancement.
If your current employer is completely resistant to your career advancement goals, it may be time to move on. But it’s generally worth having that conversation with your boss before making a decision. If you have a good working relationship, your supervisor may be able and willing to help you brainstorm ways of pursuing your dreams, even if a promotion is currently off the table.
