The Skills You Should Showcase During an Interview

Interviewing for a job can be nerve-wracking. There are so many little details to consider, from what you wear to how early to arrive. But from the interviewer’s perspective, they want you to succeed. The sooner they find a qualified candidate who fits with the company culture, the sooner they can stop worrying about filling the position. To prove you’re that candidate, here are the skills you should showcase.

Self Awareness

Nearly every interview includes the dreaded question, “What are your weaknesses?” Yet the interviewer doesn’t care exactly what they are, and simply giving a list can make you come across as lacking confidence. What they really want is for you to demonstrate self-awareness and the ability to grow. So choose a weakness that isn’t critical for the position and talk about your strategies for overcoming it.

Competencies

Employers want to know that you’re good at the basic job requirements. Prepare a few stories based on the job description that demonstrate your success in key aspects of the role. Practice telling these stories until you can deliver them succinctly and confidently.

Preparedness

Interviewers want to feel like you chose their specific company for a reason. Even if the real reason is, “I need to pay my rent,” do your homework before the interview. Develop at least a basic understanding of the industry and where the company fits into it. Also, learn what you can about the corporate structure and how the role you’re interviewing for supports the larger mission. Think of a few questions based on your research that show you know the basics and are eager to learn more.

Problem Solving

In a lot of cases, the most experienced candidate isn’t necessarily the one who gets the job. Companies often look for someone who can take the company to the next level by getting it out of a rut. Fresh ideas and innovative ways of looking at tough situations could be enough to land you the position.

Passion

If you’re changing careers, you don’t necessarily have work experience in the specific industry you’re interviewing for. But the passion for the industry can take you a long way. Try taking a class or doing some volunteer work that’s related to the role you want. Inner drive also matters. Think of stories that show your commitment to something, even if that activity isn’t directly related to the job. Are you a competitive athlete? Dedicated to your local community theater? Maybe you run a food bank or lead a women’s group or play the piano at an expert level. All these things show that you have what it takes to jump into something you know little about, learn it well and stick with it until you achieve success.
