Job Searching Best Practices: Online Solo Searching vs. Working with a Staffing Agency

If you’re in the market for a new job, you might wonder whether to embark on the journey alone or work with a staffing agency. Regardless of which you choose, there are some job searching best practices to keep in mind.

Solo Searching

If you opt to manage your job hunt alone, be sure to follow these tips:

  • Be selective. You don’t necessarily need to meet 100% of the listed qualifications, but take a moment to ensure that the job feels like a good fit. Otherwise, you’re just wasting everyone’s time.
  • Use niche sites. Find job boards that focus on the types of jobs you want, either by industry or by the type of role. You’ll generally find less competition, which means better odds for success.
  • Customize every submission. Don’t send out a generic resume and cover letter. Take a few minutes to make sure it’s tailored to the specific position and company. Search the job description for a few keywords you can add to your materials.
  • Reach out. If there’s a company you really want to work for, don’t be afraid to send an email to ask if they’re hiring. Explain why you are specifically interested in that company and what you have to offer.

Staffing Agency

If you decide to work with a staffing agency, you’ll have access to tremendous benefits. These include a pool of trusted companies that are actively hiring, help with your resume and interview skills, and a recruiter who is eager to find the right match. All these services are free for job hunters, but you’ll need to hold up your end of the bargain. Be sure to:

  • Be honest. Your recruiter is on your side. Let them know what type of work you want, whether you are interested in temporary or full-time positions, and what sort of background you have. Be ready to discuss any gaps on your resume along with any work-related difficulties you may have in the past.
  • Be flexible. You may have a certain industry or type of job in mind. But your recruiter is an expert in helping people find the right fit. If they have an idea that seems a bit out-of-the-box, give it some serious consideration. You might just wind up in the perfect role for you!
  • Be patient. It’s a good idea to stay in regular contact with your recruiter. But finding just the right fit could take some time. When you check in, keep it light and friendly, rather than grilling your recruiter on why you don’t have a job yet.
  • Don’t be afraid to say no. While it’s always smart to consider your recruiter’s suggestions, if a position feels wrong to you, don’t feel obligated to accept it. Instead, explain what you don’t like about it. Your recruiter will use that information to find you a better fit.
