Working through the winter at a warehouse or factory during an Ohio winter can feel like running uphill. After the holiday excitement, going to work with dark skies and cold weather isn’t exactly motivational. But with a few simple habits, you can make the winter shift feel cozier and brighter.
Dress for the Elements
Whether you’re outdoors (or it feels like it) or commuting in the dark, you’ll work better when you’re not freezing. Layers are your friend. On top of your regular gear, include a solid waterproof coat, warm hat, and gloves. The goal: let your body worry about the job, not about the cold.
Make Your Spot Feel Right
If you’re working heavy machinery, safety is number one, but if you’re at a desk, work station, or doing small‑tool tasks, bring in a touch of comfort (if you can). A cozy sweater, warm socks, maybe a mini blanket for your chair. If you’re comfortable, you’re more efficient.
Light it Up
Dark mornings and early nights wear on you. Add extra lighting in your workspace—LED desk lamps, string lights, or warm desk bulbs can boost your mood. Even consider a subtle scent diffuser (if your space allows). Create a little environment you don’t dread coming into.
Warm Your Lunch & Sip Cocoa
A hot lunch goes a long way when the mercury drops. Soup, chili, stew—it keeps you warm from the inside out. Add in a mug of hot cocoa, warm coffee, or tea, and you’ve got a mini boost to your shift. A full, warm belly = better morale and focus.
Step Outside for a Break
Instead of letting winter drag you down, lean into it. Take a quick, brisk walk outdoors, breathe the cold air, get your circulation going. Organize a fun coworker outing – shaking off the inside air helps reset.
Winter shifts don’t have to be the toughest part of the year. With small, intentional changes, you can shift from “just getting through” to making them something you can enjoy.
