Manufacturing positions run the gamut from machine operators to woodworkers to quality control inspectors. No matter what specific job you’re going for, though, four things should always appear on your manufacturing resume. Here’s what to include.
1. Hard Skills
Hard skills include anything you know how to do that is directly related to the position you’re applying for. Examples include machining, welding, and product design. Many employers are willing to train you in the specific skills needed for the job, but they like to see that you know your way around machinery.
2. Soft Skills
Soft skills make you a better employee, leader, and team member. They are transferrable to any job, regardless of industry. Examples include time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving. If you have strong, soft skills, employers may be more willing to take a chance on you, even if you don’t have experience in the specific position.
3. Keywords
Today, most resumes go through an automated software system before a human ever sees them. To avoid having your resume rejected by the software, you’ll need to include keywords. Take a close look at the job description and choose wording that matches. Never claim to have knowledge or experience that you don’t have, but describe your skills and experience in ways that mirror the job description.
4. Results
Employers want to know what you can do for them, and your resume is the perfect place to show off your previous accomplishments. For each job that you list, focus on your accomplishments. Use numbers and percentages to explain how your work benefited the company. Get rid of useless language that describes your daily tasks, and replace it with action-oriented words that highlight your successes.
Manufacturing is a broad field, and many positions are highly specialized. Employers don’t necessarily expect you to have experience in the exact role you’re applying for. But they do expect your manufacturing resume to show that you’re comfortable around machinery and have the soft skills required of any great team member, and to show off what you’ve done before.
