6 Simple Work Habits That Will Make You Better (and Happier!) at Your Job

While you’re making your annual New Year’s resolutions, don’t forget about work. Just a few simple habits can dramatically improve your work life, ultimately making you both more productive and more fulfilled. Here are a few work habits to consider implementing in the next 12 months.

1. Practice Self-Care

You know how on an airplane, they tell you that if there’s an emergency, you should put on your own oxygen mask first? You can’t be any good for others, including your boss and coworkers, if you don’t take care of yourself. In the new year, prioritize self-care including:

Exercise at least 30 minutes, 5 days per week.

Sleep at least 7 hours per night.

Boost your nutrition by increasing the number of colors on your plate and making sure you get a combination of proteins, fruits and vegetables, complex carbs, and healthy fats.

2. Take Regular Breaks

The brain is not designed to focus intently for 8 or more hours per day. Trying to push yourself for too long will only lead to frustration, making mistakes, and a loss of productivity. You’ll also put yourself at risk for repetitive use injuries, whether you’re spending the day typing or operating a machine.

One of the most important work habits, then, is taking rest breaks. Every hour, get up and stretch for a few minutes. And as often as possible, go for a short walk. Allow yourself to clear your mind while exercising your body. Resist the urge to play on your phone, as your brain needs a legitimate break.

3. Ask for Feedback

Work can be stressful, and not knowing whether you’re doing a good job can make it more stressful. At the beginning of the year, meet with your supervisor. Ask for regular check-in meetings, perhaps once a month. This will help you understand what you’re doing well and what you need to improve, ultimately giving you a road map to better success.

4. Get Organized

The more cluttered your workspace, the more it can affect you both mentally and physically. An organized workspace lets you access what you need when you need it, while also giving you a more serene environment to relax your mind. While you’re at it, also work on organizing your schedule. Knowing what to expect each week gives you time to make sure you’re prepared.

5. Dress One Notch Up

Although casual attire is the norm in many workplaces, especially in the COVID-19 era, the way you dress can affect how you feel. If you’re hoping for a promotion this year, try dressing one notch up from how you normally would. This will not only send a message that you’re serious, but it will help you feel more like a leader.

6. Stay Positive

The past two years have been rough, but you can choose how you approach the future. Whenever possible, dig deep and find the positivity that lives within you. Every day is a new reason for hope, and you never know where your positive attitude may lead.
