How to Strategically Prepare for Your Interview

Now is a great time to search for a new job. But if you have been out of the job-hunting game for a while, you might not be sure how best to prepare for a job interview. Here are a few tips to ease your nerves and boost your chances for a successful meeting.

Dig Into the Job Details

Go through the job listing with a fine-tooth comb, and take notes on how you fit each requirement. Think about ways that your education and experience prepared you for each duty, and jot down information about any relevant accomplishments you have. This will help you decide how best to frame your personal story.

Develop an Elevator Pitch

This is simply a 60 to 90-second overview of why you’re perfect for the job. Think of it as a movie trailer—your elevator pitch should entice the interviewer to hear more. Share things like why you want the position, what you love about the company, and what makes you uniquely you.

Practice the STAR method

The STAR method is a way of framing your responses to behavioral prompt interview questions as clear, easy-to-follow stories. You’ll likely hear questions such as “Tell me about a time when…” or “What would you do if…” You can’t write the specific stores ahead of time, since you don’t know what will be asked, but you can practice using the method.

STAR is an acronym for:

Situation: Build the scene with just a handful of details.

Task: Explain why you were in the scene.

Action: Describe the actions you took, step by step.

Result: Briefly share what happened.

You can apply the STAR method to any story you want to tell. Remember to keep it concise and share only as much detail as you need to show off your skills.

Decide What to Ask

Remember that a job interview is a two-way street. The interviewer is gathering information to determine if you’re right for the company. You should be doing the same to find out if the company is right for you. Good questions to ask typically focus on things like how job success is measured, what the interviewer likes best about working for the company, or even what the company’s core values are.
