5 helpful job interview tips

Who doesn’t get nervous during the interview process? Legs start shaking and we tend to get hot due to nerves. While nerves are normal, there are things we can do to help calm our nerves during an interview. Being prepared is key. Don’t walk into an interview without taking the time to do a little research beforehand.

5 helpful job interview tips:

  1. Don’t forget to wear antiperspirant.
  2. Put your phone on silent.
  3. Wash your hands.
  4. Speak clearly
  5. Avoid drinking alcohol beforehand.

Don’t forget to wear antiperspirant.

Sometimes we can get in a rush or become forgetful due to our nerves. When we are nervous, our bodies tend to get warmer which can result in sweaty underarms. In order to prevent wet stains or smells from occurring you want to make sure that you apply a trusty antiperspirant before you go in for your interview.

Put your phone on silent.

Cell phones are great when it comes to emergencies but they can also cause you trouble in important situations, like a job interview. Don’t let your phone ringer ruin your chances of landing a new job because your friend texted “LOL.” The best practice is either to leave your phone in the car for an hour or turn your phone completely off and leave it in your pocket. Your friends and family will be okay during your 30-45 minute interview.

Wash your hands.

The handshake is important because it goes along with your first impression. Don’t let sticky or sweaty fingers ruin your chances of landing the job. If your hands tend to get sweaty when you are nervous you may want to leave some napkins or hand sanitizer in your pockets just in case.

Speak clearly.

Speak up and speak loud when you are in the interview. If your throat tends to get dry take advantage of any free water that the interviewer may offer you. Also, don’t forget to smile when speaking. It will help show the interviewer how excited you are for the opportunity.

Avoid drinking alcohol beforehand.

Are you still nervous about your interview? Don’t take a shot of your favorite alcoholic drink before your interview. The interviewer may smell it on your breath and completely ruin your chances of landing the job. If you are really nervous, try doing breathing exercises to help calm your nerves.
