If you’re looking for a job that will pay well and give you plenty of time with your family, you may want to consider working third shift. Although every employer sets their own specific hours, third shift is overnight—maybe 11pm to 7am or midnight to 8am. Though it’s not for everyone, here are a few key reasons to consider whether the graveyard shift is right for you.
1. Personal and Family Time
Most of the world operates during the day. From visiting the hairdresser to going to school to watching your kid’s soccer game, it’s hard to juggle everything if you’re working traditional hours. You will need to sleep, of course, but if you’re the kind of person who can easily switch your sleep schedule around, you might just find that working overnight gives you more hours to get things done.
2. Higher Pay
Many people dislike third shift, so employers often have to sweeten the pot to fill those shifts. This often comes in the form of a pay differential. You might make as much as $3 per hour extra, just for doing the exact same work on an overnight basis. And since there are typically fewer people on the night shift, it can be that much easier to get a promotion.
3. Slower Pace
While it’s not true for every worksite, third shift, in general, tends to be less frenetic than first and second shift. You’re likely to see fewer (if any) customers, upper management will rarely (if ever) show up to walk the floor, and you’re not likely to get bogged down in meetings. It can also be easier to bond with your coworkers when there’s not as much going on.
4. Saving on Childcare
If you have kids, you know that the costs of childcare continue to skyrocket. If you have a spouse or partner who works during the day, you may be able to dramatically reduce the amount of paid childcare you need.
Third shift isn’t right for everyone, but it makes no sense to dismiss it out of hand. Consider these benefits when deciding whether your next job should be on the graveyard shift.
