If you’re looking for a new job in the new year, you probably already know that COVID-19 upended everything in 2020. Though vaccines are on their way, it could take most of the year to return to some semblance of normal. The unemployment rate is down, but it is still quite high. Many businesses are streamlining operations, and competition is stiff. To meet your 2021 career goals, you’ll need to take a hard look at your job search process and figure out how to rise above your competition. Here are some tips.
Focus on your resume
Though your pre-pandemic resume may have been good, it might not be enough today. Many companies are conducting some or all of their operations remotely, so be sure to point out any work from home skills you might have. In addition, businesses are looking for flexible employees who can adapt to ongoing changes, so be sure to highlight your adaptability. Pay close attention to every job description, and customize your resume to each employer’s needs.
Expand your horizons
The service sector has virtually collapsed in many regions. But some industries, such as manufacturing, are doing well. Look for opportunities outside what you’ve done before, and think through ways that your previous experiences could translate to a new career.
Prepare to interview remotely
Even if the work is onsite, a lot of companies have moved their office tasks, including hiring, online. Be ready to interview by phone or video chat. At a minimum, you’ll need a solid internet connection and a quiet space with few visual distractions and no interruptions.
Tap into your network
With so much competition for jobs, it’s vital to find an “in” anywhere you can. Look to your network of relatives, friends, and former coworkers. Someone might just know of an opening that you wouldn’t have found on your own.
Consider a staffing agency
COVID-19 has created a whole new world for job seekers, and navigating it can be complex. With a staffing agency, you’ll gain a wide range of free resources to help propel you to the front of the pack. These include, but are not limited to, an existing network of businesses that are actively hiring and professional assistance with everything from tweaking your resume to improving your interview skills. You can also look into temporary or temp-to-hire work, which can get your foot in the door and get you back to work faster than sticking to a full-time job search.
