Why first impressions matter more than you think

First impressions may be the only impression you ever make, make it a good one.

Whether we realize it or not, we unconsciously judge someone on our first meeting. It’s hard to be at your best 24/7, but your personality can help carry you past your bad hair day. Especially in job interviews, your first impression will either carry you to your second interview or cause you not to receive a call back. You have to keep in mind that an interviewer sometimes sits through a handful of interviews every day depending on what positions are open.

You may be unsure of yourself heading into the interview due to the qualifications in the job description, but your first impression can help outshine your weaknesses.

Interview First Impression Tips for Success:

Don’t be late!

Arriving at least 10 minutes early to your interview shows the interviewer that you won’t be late to work.

Research!

Always make sure you research the company you are interviewing for ahead of time. More than likely you will be tested on what you know about the company or job role during the interview.

Prepare questions!

This ties in with your research on the company. Researching the company and the job role will help you come up with educated questions that show the interviewer that you are really interested in working for their company.

Be enthusiastic!

You may have had a rough morning or got stuck in traffic on your way to the interview, but now is not the time to let that show. No one wants a negative team member, so brush yourself off and show them what you’re really made of.

Come to the interview dressed for the position you are applying for!

This may seem like common knowledge but you may be surprised at what some people will wear to an interview.

Men: don’t forget to trim your facial hair because depending on the job, it may be a requirement to shave anyway.

Say thank you!

This is no time to forget your manors. Telling the interviewer thank you for taking the time out of their day to meet with you, shows that you know how to treat others with respect. Sending a follow up thank you email will also help score you bonus points, especially if some of the other candidates failed to do so.

Now that you know what it takes to make a successful first impression, you are interview ready!
